Rapper Young Thug Releases Album From Jail

Fans of the Atlanta rapper Young Thug, who has been in prison since May 2022 and is currently the subject of a protracted gang conspiracy trial, awoke on Friday to the release of a new album.

Young Thug’s first LP since the top-charting “Punk” in 2021, “Business is Business” is a 15-track album with features from Drake, Future, 21 Savage, and Travis Scott.

The 31-year-old Jeffery Williams was one of 28 suspected street gang members who were charged in a racketeering indictment. The charges against the defendants included murder, assault, carjacking, drug trafficking, and theft.

The indictment rocked Atlanta’s rap scene, where Young Thug is regarded as one of the most influential artists and a key contributor to creating the sound of modern rap.

Prosecutors have used song lyrics as proof that Young Thug’s record label, Young Stoner Life, an imprint of 300 Entertainment, is a front for a crime syndicate, a tactic that has received criticism.

Jury selection started in January and is still going on six months later. The case has moved slowly.

Along with fights between police and defendants, courtroom occurrences like the detention of a defense attorney and the seizure of another’s laptop have resulted in lengthy delays.

For having a “inappropriate relationship” with a defendant, a courtroom deputy was sentenced to jail.

A number of prospective jurors have also been found in contempt of court; one was had to write a 30-page essay on the value of jury duty after she missed court due to business travel to the Dominican Republic.
