United States President Donald Trump has commended President Bola Tinubu for his decisive leadership in tackling terrorism and insecurity in Nigeria, particularly the violence affecting Christian communities.
In a letter to President Tinubu, President Trump praised the Nigerian leader’s commitment to confronting terrorism and reaffirmed America’s support in strengthening Nigeria’s security and prosperity.
The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, made this known in a statement.
President Trump noted that the United States and Nigeria share a common goal of defeating terrorism and said the two countries’ 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap provides a strong framework for enhanced security collaboration.
The letter highlighted ongoing cooperation between both countries, including the deployment of United States Special Operations Forces to train and support the Armed Forces of Nigeria with intelligence, equipment and operational capabilities.
The growing security partnership has also led to improved intelligence sharing, joint operations and the establishment of a Joint Working Group co-chaired by the National Security Advisers of both countries.
A major outcome of the collaboration was the coordinated operation in the Lake Chad region on May 16, which eliminated ISIS leader Abubakar Al-Minoki and several of his commanders.
President Trump reaffirmed his commitment to deepening discussions with President Tinubu throughout his administration to further strengthen bilateral relations and enhance regional security.
