The Kaduna State Police Command has arraigned 24 suspects before a Magistrate’s Court in Kaduna over their alleged involvement in the killing of an Islamiyya school teacher in Maraban Jos, Igabi Local Government Area of the state.
Dateline Nigeria reports that the woman, Ummulkhairi Usman, was falsely accused of attempting to steal children from the area. She was lynched by a mob after threats to burn down both the police station and the residence of the ward head in the area.
The suspects consisting of 20 males and four females were arraigned Tuesday on four-counts charge before Magistrate’s court Number 4, NDA bus stop.
Counsel to the Kaduna State Police Command, CSP Martins Danjuma, told journalist after the court sitting that the suspects were charged for alleged conspiracy to commit crime, inciting public disturbance, destruction of life and property as well as culpable homicide.
He said the police tried their best to save the woman but were overpowered by the mob numbering about 600. “If you go to the police station you will stones and sticks used by the mob. The woman was lynched and her corpse burnt. We have all the evidence,” he said
CSP Danjuma said more than 100 suspects were arrested. “We arraigned 24 today: 20 males and four females. more than 70 others are still being investigated by the police to ensure that all those involved are prosecuted in accordance with the law,” he said.
Meanwhile, Magistrate Nahid has adjourned the case to July 21, 2026.
The case has drawn attention in Kaduna, with residents calling for swift prosecution to serve as a deterrent.
