Pastor Emmanuel Iren has criticised wealthy individuals who bargain aggressively with poor traders despite having the financial capacity to pay the asking price.
Speaking in a sermon, Iren questioned why someone who can afford to drive an SUV with air conditioning would haggle over the price of plantain sold by a struggling trader.
The pastor argued that such behaviour could amount to exploiting people because of the financial advantage the buyer has over them.
He also described situations where traders, out of desperation, are forced to return to customers after walking away from negotiations, sometimes visibly distressed, just to make a sale.
Iren stressed that attending church and praying does not necessarily translate into positive character changes, urging wealthy people not to use their bargaining power to take advantage of those who are financially disadvantaged.
His words …
“Do you know you can be so wealthy but you’re so ingratiated into the worldly system that in your SUV you have the audacity to wind down your window with your AC and you’re pricing plantain. They said 250, you dey say 200. Why are you pricing plantain? You want God to pun!$h you?
And sometimes, the person will be angry and walk away, but in their desperation they’d run back to you. And as they are giving you you can almost see tears welling up in their eyes. And you take it.
You can be in church praying and you are not changing. That’s what I’m saying. Why are you pricing. Who told you you just price everything, God has blessed you. And guess what, it’s only the poor that suffer these things. Don’t exploit because you have bargaining power….”
