The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has assured Nigerians that security agencies are intensifying efforts to rescue pupils and teachers abducted in Oyo State. He disclosed that Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs) have been deployed to strengthen ongoing rescue operations and ensure the victims are returned safely.
Speaking during a conference with senior police officers in Abuja, the IGP also ordered the immediate nationwide enforcement against vehicles operating without registration plates or with concealed and altered number plates. He said such vehicles are often used by kidnappers, terrorists, and other criminal elements to evade arrest.
Disu stated that the Nigeria Police Force, working alongside other security agencies, had deployed its full operational capacity to secure the release of the abducted victims. According to him, progress has already been made in the rescue mission, adding that security operatives would not relent until all hostages are safely reunited with their families.
The IGP further announced that the deployment of DIGs, effective from June 15, 2026, is part of reforms aimed at improving supervision, operational coordination, and accountability within police formations nationwide. He noted that the initiative would strengthen field operations and enhance rapid response to security threats across the country.
Highlighting recent achievements of the Force, Disu revealed that police operations since May 2026 led to the arrest of suspected terrorists, kidnappers, armed robbers, cultists, and murder suspects, while dozens of kidnapped victims were rescued. He also directed Commissioners of Police to establish coordinated “Handshake Patrols” between neighbouring states to improve intelligence sharing and prevent criminals from exploiting jurisdictional boundaries.
