The Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, has warned that fake news, propaganda, and misinformation now pose serious threats to Nigeria’s national security. He called for stronger collaboration between the military and the media to counter false narratives capable of undermining public confidence and destabilising security operations across the country.
Speaking at the 2026 Directorate of Army Public Relations Combined First and Second Quarters Media Workshop in Abuja, the COAS, represented by Major General Musa Etsu-Ndagi, said modern adversaries increasingly rely on information manipulation and psychological operations. He noted that unchecked disinformation could be as damaging as direct security threats.
Shaibu described the workshop theme, “Media Integration as a Force Multiplier for Joint and Multi-Agency Operational Success,” as timely and strategic. According to him, the media now plays a vital role not only in informing the public but also in shaping perceptions, projecting credible narratives, and countering hostile propaganda against security agencies.
The Army Chief stated that the Nigerian Army has continued to record operational successes through improved intelligence sharing, synergy, and coordinated planning among security agencies. However, he stressed that these gains must be supported by effective strategic communication capable of reinforcing public trust and boosting troop morale.
He urged journalists and media practitioners to promote conflict-sensitive reporting and highlight the sacrifices and professionalism of troops operating in difficult conditions. Shaibu also reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty and thanked President Bola Tinubu for his continued support to the Armed Forces
