Oriire abduction: Truth must prevail over politics — Lagos PDP

The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has thrown its weight behind Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s call for an independent international investigation into the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Speaking with Tribune online, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Prince Christopher Odianarewo, described the governor’s demand as “responsible and necessary”, arguing that the circumstances surrounding the abduction, the victims’ prolonged captivity and their eventual rescue warrant a transparent and impartial investigation.

Odianarewo said the pursuit of truth and accountability should not be sacrificed for political considerations, stressing that an independent inquiry would strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s security institutions.

He also expressed concern over what he described as the opposition of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to calls for an independent investigation.

According to him, no government or political party should resist a transparent probe if there is nothing to hide.

He maintained that Nigerians deserve a full account of the incident, noting that parents and the general public have a legitimate right to demand accountability in matters relating to the safety and security of schoolchildren.

Odianarewo said Governor Makinde’s position was motivated by the need to promote justice, accountability and restore public confidence, rather than by political interests.

The Lagos PDP therefore endorsed the governor’s appeal and urged relevant international organisations, including agencies of the United Nations and global human rights bodies, to support efforts aimed at uncovering the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

He added that greater international cooperation in combating terrorism and violent crime could enhance Nigeria’s capacity to respond to security threats involving children.

“The truth should never be feared. Transparency should never be resisted. Accountability should never be politicised. If the facts support the official narrative, an independent investigation will only validate it. If there are unanswered questions, Nigerians deserve to know the truth,” Odianarewo said.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to justice, transparency and the protection of every Nigerian child, insisting that an independent investigation would serve the interests of both the victims and the nation.
