The opposition lawmakers in the National Assembly have said that contrary to speculations making the rounds, they are committed to proceeding with the plan to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to the legislators, if he fails to address the insecurity in the country within six weeks then the impeachment matter would be revisited when NASS resumes plenary.

Speaking in a series of interviews with The Punch, the lawmakers, mostly members of the Peoples Democratic Party dismissed media reports claiming they had backed down on the plan.

The Kuje Medium Correctional Facility came under attack in July and resulted in the escape of hundreds of prisoners including more than 60 members of the dreaded Boko Haram sect.

Following shortly was an attack on the Presidential Guards Brigade troops at Bwari-Kubwa road, in the Federal Capital Territory.

A captain, lieutenant and six soldiers were killed while others sustained injuries.

Days later, insurgents also attacked a checkpoint at Zuma rock, making it the third attack within the nation’s capital in one month.

Arising from the worrisome security situation, Senator Francis Fadahunsi of the Peoples Democratic Party representing Osun East senatorial district, said it was not true that the opposition were retreating on their move to impeach the President.

Speaking on the senators alleged backtracking, he said; “Who said so? Who are the opposition (lawmakers) that met? You did an interview with Senator Gershom Bassey who said that we meant what we said. Those people saying such are not feeling fine.

“Even northern senators are in support of the impeachment; you heard Senator Clifford (Ordia) from Edo, Senator Bulkachuwa (Mohammed) and the rest. So, who are those that told them so?’’

Enyinnaya Abaribe, the All Progressives Grand Alliance lawmaker senator representing Abia South, speaking in corroboration, also debunked the reports and stated that he was not aware of such a decision as the plenary was adjourned on the same day they moved to impeach the president.

He said, “No such thing. We went on break that same day.”

On his part, Benue North West lawmaker, Senator Orker Jev, also said; “I’m not aware of any such development. Most likely untrue.’’

Further debunking reports that the impeachment threat had died, Deputy Minority Leader of the House, Toby Okechukwu, said it has not been stepped down.
