Opinion: Why It May Be In Sanusi Lamido’s Best Interests To Choose Another Path From Emirship
The recent closed-door meeting between President Bola Tinubu and Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the 14th Emir of Kano and former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has sparked speculation about Sanusi’s future role in Nigerian politics. While there are two options on the table for Sanusi – returning as Emir or serving as CBN Governor once again. However, there are compelling reasons why it may be in Sanusi’s best interest to choose an alternative path instead.
Promoting Independence and Progressive Thinking
As the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Sanusi Lamido Sanusi demonstrated his aptitude for independent thinking and progressive policies. Returning as Emir may limit his ability to voice independent opinions and affect broader societal change. Embracing a role outside the traditional confines of the Emirate system would afford Sanusi the freedom to engage in national and global conversations on socio-economic issues without being confined to a specific cultural or regional perspective.
Expanding Influence and National Impact
By refraining from the position of Emir, Sanusi can broaden his sphere of influence and have a more significant impact on the national stage. As a respected figure with extensive experience in economic and financial matters, Sanusi has the potential to contribute significantly to national development in a broader capacity. Serving as an advisor, policymaker, or consultant in various sectors would allow him to leverage his expertise to benefit Nigeria as a whole, rather than confining his contributions to a single region.
Fostering Democratic Principles and Leadership
Opting not to return as Emir aligns with the principles of democracy and leadership by embracing a more dynamic and inclusive approach. Nigeria’s democratic system thrives on the principles of checks and balances, institutional accountability, and the rotation of power. By exploring alternative roles outside the traditional monarchy, Sanusi would contribute to the cultivation of a democratic culture that values meritocracy, diversity, and equal opportunities for all Nigerians.
