A Nigerian woman who has lived in the Netherlands for more than 10 years has expressed disappointment after returning to Nigeria to see how the country and its system have changed since she left.
Speaking in a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), the woman revealed that she is now a Dutch citizen and married to a Dutch citizen. She explained that she had not returned to Nigeria since leaving over a decade ago and decided to visit to see how things had changed.
According to her, she was disappointed by what she encountered, claiming that Nigeria has remained largely unchanged since she left, except for the bridge around Ojodu Berger.
In her words, she said:
“I’ve been in Netherlands for more than ten years, and I’m a citizen of Netherlands, married to a citizen there. Since I left, I’ve not been to Nigeria, so I decided to come here and see how the system is. To be honest, I’m disappointed.”
The woman compared Nigeria’s system with that of the Netherlands, noting that taxes paid by working citizens are used to support those who cannot afford certain necessities.
She also highlighted access to public services, noting that children from different backgrounds attend the same schools and residents generally use healthcare facilities close to where they live.
She further explained that everyone is insured and receives emergency medical attention regardless of their status.
“If there is an accident, it doesn’t matter who you are. They come, they pick you, they start treatment from the ambulance, and then they take you to hospital. You are covered with insurance. That’s how the system works,” she added.
Her comments have prompted discussions online about public services, welfare and the differences between life in Nigeria and the Netherlands.
