Ondo State has secured a proposed compressed natural gas (CNG) infrastructure project designed to improve gas supply to manufacturers, transport operators and other businesses seeking alternatives to conventional petroleum fuels.
The project, being developed by OCTAGRAM Fusion CNG in partnership with the Ondo State Development and Investment Promotion Agency (ONDIPA), will involve the establishment of a CNG mother station with a planned processing capacity of nine million standard cubic feet of gas per day.
The agreement, signed on October 14, 2026, forms part of efforts to expand natural gas infrastructure and encourage industrial investment in the state.
The proposed facility is expected to support the distribution of compressed natural gas to industrial customers and transport operators, potentially reducing dependence on diesel and petrol where suitable gas-powered equipment and vehicles are available.
For manufacturers, access to reliable gas supplies could provide an alternative energy source for production processes, particularly in areas where electricity supply remains inadequate.
The project could also support the development of CNG distribution networks serving commercial transport operators, logistics companies and businesses operating vehicle fleets.
However, the agreement represents an investment development rather than a completed infrastructure project.
The facility has reportedly obtained a Licence to Establish, while construction authorisation and financing arrangements remain necessary before development can proceed.
These requirements will be important in determining the project’s implementation schedule and eventual commercial operations.
Ondo State’s proximity to gas-producing areas provides opportunities for developing infrastructure that connects available gas resources with industrial and commercial demand.
Nevertheless, the project’s commercial viability will depend on securing reliable gas feedstock, financing, distribution arrangements and sufficient demand from prospective customers.
Nigeria has been encouraging greater domestic utilisation of natural gas as businesses and transport operators seek alternatives to increasingly expensive conventional fuels.
CNG infrastructure investment can support this transition by improving access to gas outside existing pipeline networks, although customers must also invest in compatible vehicles, equipment or conversion systems.
For Ondo State, the proposed facility offers an opportunity to attract related investments in gas distribution, industrial energy services and transportation infrastructure.
Its economic contribution will ultimately depend on successful construction, operational capacity and the ability to deliver competitively priced gas to businesses and transport operators.
