The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) president, Comrade Joe Ajaero, has come forward following its initial threat to call a nationwide strike in opposition to the removal of fuel subsidies to accuse the Tinubu administration of using strong-arm tactics to thwart the unions’ call for industrial action.

Ajaero disclosed that the federal government had dispatched three truckloads of armed cops to plaster the notice at the union office before asking for a negotiation during an interview on Channels TV’s “Sunrise Daily” on Wednesday morning. The NLC and TUC have previously been unable to strike due to this contentious court judgment. The notification was nonetheless posted at the union offices by three truckloads of armed police officers.

He noted that there were numerous media reports concerning the reasons the strike action was put on hold. Yes, we did get together to talk about the ‘exparte’ order from the government. No matter how absurd the court order might have seemed, we had to show the government that we abide by it. We also needed to show the administration that, despite its shortcomings, we uphold the law in all of its ramifications.

The government had already gone to an industrial court to file an action by 4 p.m. on the day they asked us to talk, with the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice appearing as witnesses. In every way, accepting the Minister of Justice as a plaintiff in such a case is difficult. The same administration sent three vehicles packed with armed police officials to our office to post the order even after the court decision was made. Once more, you can only return to court to ask for substituted service if the intended recipient declines to accept service of an order. However, in this instance, shortly after the command to come and paste it at our secretariat was given, armed police were summoned.
