NUPENG Pledges Better Welfare, Safety for Oil Workers on May Day

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers has assured workers in the oil and gas sector of improved welfare, safer working conditions, and stronger representation as the industry continues to face economic and operational pressures.

In its 2026 May Day message, the union said it is committed to restoring confidence among workers and strengthening solidarity across Nigeria’s energy sector, which remains central to the country’s economy.

NUPENG acknowledged that oil and gas workers continue to operate under difficult conditions, including workplace hazards, financial strain, and safety concerns, despite their critical role in sustaining national energy supply.

Speaking on the occasion, the union president, Salimon Oladiti, described workers as the backbone of the industry and praised their resilience amid ongoing challenges.

“This year’s May Day is more than a celebration of labour; it is a powerful reminder of your resilience, sacrifices, and indispensable contributions to the Nigerian economy,” he said.

Oladiti added that the union’s new leadership is focused on delivering tangible improvements, including enhanced welfare packages, stronger safety standards, and more effective advocacy for members’ rights.

He noted that the union aims to become more responsive, pledging to build an organisation that listens to workers’ concerns and acts decisively on them.

“As a union under renewed leadership, I bring a message of hope. There is a fresh resolve to prioritise improved welfare, advocate for safer working conditions, and ensure stronger, more effective representation for every member,” he said.

The union urged members to remain united and vigilant, stressing that solidarity will be key to shaping policies and protecting workers’ interests in the sector.

Despite ongoing challenges, NUPENG expressed optimism about the future of the oil and gas industry, reaffirming its commitment to stand by workers and push for reforms that ensure a more secure and equitable working environment.
