NDLEA seeks Shari’a council’s support to tackle drug abuse in Kaduna

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kaduna State Command, has sought stronger collaboration with the Supreme Council for Shari’a in Nigeria (SCSN) to tackle drug trafficking and abuse in the state.

The State Commander, CN Maijama’a Muhammad, made the call on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, when he paid a courtesy visit to the Council in Kaduna, where he was received by its Deputy President, Sheikh Abdulkareem Hashim.

Muhammad said the visit was part of his stakeholder engagements since assuming duty, aimed at strengthening partnerships with relevant groups.

He thanked the Council for its continued support to the NDLEA and other security agencies, stressing that the fight against illicit drugs requires coordinated efforts involving government, security agencies, religious leaders, traditional institutions and communities.

The Commander noted that drug abuse remains a major threat to public safety and the future of young people, particularly those within the 18 to 35 age bracket, with Cannabis sativa among the commonly abused substances.

He disclosed that most illicit drugs intercepted in Kaduna are smuggled from other states, making intelligence sharing, route monitoring and sustained joint operations essential.

Muhammad also briefed the Deputy President on the Command’s intelligence-led operations, including deployment of personnel along major routes and strategic locations, stop-and-search operations and other measures to disrupt movement and distribution of illicit drugs.

He highlighted the Command’s achievements since assuming duty, including arrests and seizures, convictions, counselling, treatment and rehabilitation, and integrity drug testing.

In his response, Sheikh Hashim commended the Commander and officers of the Command for their visibility, dedication and professionalism.

He assured of the Council’s support in propagating the dangers of drug trafficking and illicit substances in mosques and communities.

Both parties reaffirmed commitment to stronger collaboration, intelligence sharing and coordinated operations to tackle illicit drug trafficking and other threats to peace and security in Kaduna State.
