- Agency engages religious leaders and agency personnel in the fight against drug abuse on UN International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano Strategic Command, on 26th June 2026, concluded a week-long programme of activities commemorating the United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking with Juma’at services that reinforced its anti-drug message across the community and within the agency.
A principal service was held at Jami’u Maulana Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Juma’at Mosque where religious leaders, community members and NDLEA officials gathered to deepen collaboration between the Agency and the religious community in the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
A similar sermon was also conducted at the NDLEA Headquarters Kano Command Juma’at Mosque, ensuring that agency personnel and neighboring communities received the same message of prevention and moral guidance.
During the khutbah at Jami’u Maulana Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani, Imam Muhammad Nasir Adam — Chairman, Kano State Council of Imams and Chairman, National Council of Imams — urged the public to abstain from illicit substances, describing them as primary enablers of crime and other social vices.
He called on the NDLEA to strengthen its partnership with the National Imams Council and to organize sensitization and awareness seminars for imams to equip them with the knowledge needed to effectively disseminate anti-drug messages. Imam Nasir Adam also commended the Kano State Government for its support of the Agency’s mandate.
Commander Dahiru Yahaya Lawal, NDLEA Kano Strategic Command, thanked Imam Nasir Adam for his continued support through regular sermons and community engagement. Commander Lawal noted that holding the same sermon at the NDLEA Headquarters reaffirmed the Agency’s internal commitment to combating drug abuse, provided an opportunity for staff and the neighboring communities to reflect on their role in prevention, and strengthened unity between enforcement, faith leaders and the wider community. He appealed to the public to join the collective effort to curb substance abuse in Kano State and nationwide.
The NDLEA Kano Strategic Command said these engagements with faith leaders and agency personnel are part of a broader demand-reduction strategy that leverages trusted community voices in prevention, education and rehabilitation to reduce the harm caused by illicit drugs.
