The Commander, NDLEA Kano Strategic Command, CN DY Lawal, has paid a courtesy visit to the Commissioner Ministry of Health Kano State, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Kano State Ministry of Health, Pharmacist Aminu Bashir.
This is part of efforts to strengthen the existing collaboration and synergy between the two institutions in the fight against drug abuse and illicit drug-related activities.
The Commander described the Ministry of Health as a sister institution to the NDLEA and stressed the importance of sustained cooperation, particularly in addressing the growing challenges associated with drug abuse in the state.
During the visit, CN DY Lawal highlighted the importance of conducting drug integrity tests in schools as part of preventive measures to protect young people from the dangers of substance abuse.
He also raised concerns over the diversion and misuse of pharmaceutical drugs within the health sector, calling for stronger monitoring mechanisms and closer collaboration among relevant stakeholders to prevent controlled medicines from being diverted into illicit channels.
The Commander further discussed the need to revive and strengthen drug control committee within health institutions, noting that such committee play an important role in promoting responsible handling of medicines, preventing diversion and supporting efforts to combat drug abuse.
He called for renewed commitment towards making the committee fully functional and active, while assuring the Ministry of the NDLEA’s readiness to provide the necessary support and expertise.
Responding, the Permanent Secretary, Pharmacist Aminu Bashir, applauded the Commander and the NDLEA for their continued commitment to combating drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking in Kano State.
He expressed the Ministry’s readiness to deepen its partnership with the Agency and support initiatives aimed at protecting public health, particularly among young people.
He commended the NDLEA for its proactive approach and assured the Commander of the Ministry’s continued cooperation in addressing drug diversion and other emerging challenges within the health sector.
