Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested Sheleru Sadiq, a former councillor in Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State over alleged possession of 40 kilograms of cannabis.
Femi Babafemi, NDLEA spokesperson, said Sadiq was arrested on March 2 at his residence.
In a statement on Sunday, Babafemi said that operatives found 40 kilograms of skunk, a strain of cannabis, in one of the rooms in the residence.
According to the NDLEA, Sadiq currently serves as a legislative aide.
Babafemi said the former councillor, who reportedly served two terms representing Orimedu community in the Ibeju-Lekki local government council, currently works as a legislative aide.
“In his statement, Sheleru admitted ownership of the exhibit and the property where it was recovered,” the NDLEA spokesperson said.
Meanwhile, the agency also announced other drug-related arrests across the country.
In a separate operation, NDLEA operatives arrested Emeka Hyginus Okwor, a 32-year-old businessman, with 1,000 pills of tapentadol 250mg hidden inside baby diapers.
The suspect reportedly confessed that he was transporting the drugs to Guduwa village in Gurara LGA of Niger State.
The agency also intercepted illicit drugs in other states including Kogi State, Adamawa State, Kano State and Ogun State as part of its ongoing nationwide crackdown on drug trafficking.
