The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) on Tuesday screened former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, ahead of the party’s 2027 presidential primaries at its national secretariat. The screening exercise, conducted by a panel led by Sam Egwu, lasted for more than two hours.
Obi arrived shortly before the screening committee began its session and was subsequently assessed as part of the party’s internal process for presidential aspirants. The exercise is part of the NDC’s preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Speaking with journalists after the screening, Obi dismissed claims that he had already emerged as a consensus candidate, stressing that the party’s process remained open and democratic. He said he had purchased the expression of interest form and participated fully in the exercise, adding that the process reflected internal party democracy.
The former presidential candidate also addressed speculation about possible contenders, including former President Goodluck Jonathan, stating that he was focused on offering solutions to Nigeria’s challenges rather than on who joins the race. He emphasized that his priority was building a better Nigeria through service-driven leadership.
Obi further outlined his vision for the country, highlighting the need to tackle insecurity, poverty, and corruption. He called for a safer nation where citizens can move freely without fear and urged that public resources be used for the benefit of all Nigerians, especially those struggling with economic hardship.
