The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has opened an investigation into an Asaba‑based lawyer, Mr. Chukwu Mmorwah, following a petition accusing him of impersonation and breach of trust. The petition was filed by Lagos architect Mr. Anthony Chizea through his counsel, Mr. Sanni Murtala of Bondbrief Solicitors, and dated March 12, 2026.
The probe is being handled by the NBA’s South‑South Zonal Ethics and Disciplinary Committee. Confirming the development, committee member Mrs. Chiamaka Manulu said the petition has been served on the respondent, who has 14 days to respond. She explained that the committee will review submissions from both parties before determining whether the allegations disclose criminal elements warranting further investigation.
In the petition titled “Petition for Professional Misconduct against Barrister Chukwu Mmorwah”, the complainant alleged serious misconduct, including criminal breach of trust and impersonation linked to family properties after the death of his father, Ogbueshi Francis Chizea.
According to the document, Mmorwah is reported of false accusations against the petitioner, allegedly branding him an armed robber in a bid to seize disputed assets.
The complainant also alleged that the lawyer made questionable property claims, including assertions of ownership over land near Asaba Stadium, which the petitioner disputes.
The petition further raised allegations of forgery, burglary, and other misconduct said to undermine professional ethics.
The NBA’s disciplinary process will follow established procedures under the Legal Practitioners Act and the Association’s professional code. If found culpable, sanctions could range from suspension to outright disbarment.
This case underscores growing concerns about professional ethics within the Nigerian legal profession. The NBA has reiterated its commitment to upholding standards and safeguarding public confidence in the justice system.
