A 50-year-old man has been remanded in custody at the Correctional Centre in Kirikiri Town, Lagos, for allegedly defiling an 11-year-old girl in the Kirikiri area of the state.
The defendant, Amaobi Jacob, was ordered to be remanded by Magistrate Mrs. M.O. Tanimola pending the outcome of legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecution, DPP.
He was arraigned by the Lagos State Police Command on a one-count charge bordering on defilement.
The prosecutor, ASP Lucky Ihehie, told the court that the incident occurred on July 30, 2026, at about 2:00pm at No. 11, Okey Ofo Street, Comfort Obo Estate, Kirikiri, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District.
According to the charge, the offence is punishable under Section 137 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.
The case was investigated by ASP Omono Ubhi of the Gender Unit, Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, under the supervision of CSP Omolola Odutola, following a complaint lodged at the Gender Unit by concerned persons.
After preliminary investigation, the Police processed the case and charged the matter to court for prosecution.
When the charge was read to the defendant in court, his plea was taken.
ASP Ihehie informed the court that the victim is an 11-year-old child and that the case file has been duplicated and forwarded to the DPP for legal advice. He applied for the remand of the defendant at the Correctional Centre pending the issuance of the DPP’s advice, citing the serious nature of the offence.
The defence counsel applied for bail on behalf of the defendant, but the prosecution opposed the application on the grounds of protecting the child and ensuring due process.
In her ruling, Magistrate Tanimola declined to grant bail at this stage and ordered that the defendant be remanded in custody at the Correctional Centre in Kirikiri Town, Lagos, pending the outcome of the DPP’s advice.
The Magistrate also directed that the duplicate case file be sent to the Directorate of Public Prosecution, Lagos State Ministry of Justice, for legal advice, and ordered that the minor be provided with necessary medical care and psycho-social support in line with Lagos State child protection policy.
The Lagos State Police Command restated its zero tolerance for sexual and gender-based violence, especially against children, and assured that all such cases will be thoroughly investigated and suspects brought to justice.
The Command urged parents and guardians to be vigilant, closely monitor their wards, and promptly report any form of child abuse to the nearest Police station or to the Gender Unit of the Command in Ikeja.
Members of the public were also encouraged to contact the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency for prompt intervention and support services for survivors of sexual offences.
The Police assured that the identity of the minor and her family will be fully protected throughout the course of justice.
The case has been adjourned pending the receipt of the DPP’s advice, while the defendant remains presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court of law.
