Lawyer petitions EFCC to probe Makinde’s spending, N30 billion Bodija explosion fund

A legal practitioner, Akinloye Olusegun, has petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to investigate Governor Seyi Makinde’s expenditures from his assumption of office in 2019 to 2026.

The petition was submitted to the anti-graft agency on behalf of Mr Olusegun, calling for an intensive audit of the state’s fund disbursements for infrastructure, healthcare, and other public projects, and how the money was utilised.

Mr Olusegun also asked the EFCC to investigate the N30 billion intervention that was given to the Oyo State government following the devastating explosion in the Bodija area of Ibadan in January 2025.

“Although the federal government promised N50 billion, only N30 billion was released. The remaining ₦20 billion was withheld after Makinde refused demands for inducements.

“When it was time to act, only N30 billion was released. This partial release came with demands for inducements tied to the remaining balance. Governor Makinde refused. As a result, the remaining ₦20 billion was withheld,” chief press secretary to Governor Seyi Makinde, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, said in December 2025.

The petitioner further urged the commission to scrutinise the state government’s accounts from November 4, 2024, when the funds were reportedly disbursed, while raising concerns over the government’s claim that it spent N24.6 billion of its own resources on the intervention.

The petition, however, alleged that the money remained untouched as of December 31, 2025.

Additionally, Mr Olusegun called on the EFCC to conduct other comprehensive investigations into the Oyo government, including loans reportedly obtained by Mr Makinde for different purposes such as healthcare, agriculture and infrastructure.
