A popular public announcer and commentator in Awka, Anambra State, Isaac Nwosu, popularly known as “Azia Nwosu,” has been shot dead by gunmen in the state capital.
Nwosu was killed alongside another unidentified person in separate gun attacks carried out at different locations in Awka on Sunday, August 30, 2026.
The attacks have heightened concerns over the security situation in the state capital, with residents calling for increased surveillance and stronger measures to prevent further killings.
Confirming the incident, the spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the command had condemned the attacks and launched an intensified manhunt for those responsible.
Ikenga said preliminary information available to the police indicated that three unidentified persons travelling in a silver-coloured Toyota Corolla carried out the attacks, shooting two victims at separate locations within Awka.
According to him, the vehicle’s registration number had not yet been ascertained as of the time of the report.
He said police operatives responded immediately after receiving distress calls and mobilised patrol teams to the affected areas in an effort to track down the fleeing attackers.
The bodies of the victims were subsequently recovered from Capital City Road, Amaenyi, and S.M. Okeke Street, Amaikwo, Awka, respectively.
Ikenga said the victims were taken to a hospital, where medical personnel confirmed them dead.
While one of the deceased persons remained unidentified, the second victim was identified as Isaac Nwosu, popularly known as “Azia.”
The police also recovered N7,550 in cash, a Moniepoint ATM card and a pair of slippers from the scenes of the attacks.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, described the killings as “dastardly” and unacceptable, saying the incident constituted a direct affront to the peace and security of the state.
The commissioner ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka, for a discreet and comprehensive investigation.
He also directed security operatives to intensify patrols, surveillance and intelligence gathering across Awka and neighbouring communities to apprehend the perpetrators and prevent further attacks.
The police command appealed to community leaders, residents, motorists, business owners and other members of the public who may have witnessed the incidents or have information about the attackers, their movements or the vehicle used in the operation to contact the police.
The command assured members of the public that credible information supplied to the authorities would be treated with utmost confidentiality.
The latest killings come amid continuing security concerns in parts of Anambra, with the police stressing that effective community partnership and timely sharing of credible intelligence remain crucial to tackling violent crime and ensuring the safety of residents.
The command urged residents of Awka and adjoining communities to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or activities to the appropriate security authorities.
