A Nigerian woman has sparked widespread debate on social media after revealing she mistakenly sent her mother’s monthly allowance to a stranger for several months without realising.
The lady, who shared her experience on X (formerly Twitter), explained that the error began earlier this year and only came to light recently, leaving many users stunned by the situation.
Costly mistake goes unnoticed for months
In her post, the woman disclosed that she had been transferring ₦100,000 every month, intended for her mother, into the wrong bank account since January.
According to her, the recipient’s account name matched her mother’s, which made the mistake difficult to detect at first. However, the destination bank was different from her mother’s usual account.
She admitted that the issue started when she mistakenly selected instead of while choosing the bank from her app’s dropdown menu.
“I saved the beneficiary name once and kept sending money month after month,” she wrote.
Silent sacrifice by her mother
The emotional twist in the story came when she discovered that her mother had quietly endured months without receiving the expected support.
Rather than raising concerns, her mother reportedly assumed her daughter was facing financial challenges and chose not to complain.
She adjusted her lifestyle, cut down on expenses, and remained silent throughout the period.
This revelation has drawn sympathy from many Nigerians, who described the mother’s actions as both considerate and heartbreaking.
Stranger’s silence raises ethical questions
Equally striking is the role of the unknown recipient, who allegedly received the funds consistently without raising any alarm.
The woman questioned why the individual did not attempt to notify the sender or the bank despite the repeated transactions.
“While a complete stranger was cashing out like it was their salary? No call, no warning. Nothing,” she wrote.
Her post concluded with a question that has since gone viral: would others in the same situation speak up or continue receiving the money?
