Aloy Ejimakor, Special Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has asserted that Peter Obi is Nigeria’s most heavily scrutinized former state governor because his presidential aspirations represent a historic milestone for the Igbo ethnic group.
According to Ejimakor, the Labour Party candidate is the first politician of Igbo descent to possess a genuine “fighting chance” of winning the presidency since the end of the Nigerian Civil War.
In a public statement issued on Saturday, Ejimakor argued that the intense criticism directed at Obi extends far beyond normal political discourse. He described the ongoing scrutiny as part of a broader political dynamic driven by alarm over Obi’s viable path to the nation’s highest office.
Ejimakor defended Obi’s gubernatorial record in Anambra State, emphasizing his administration’s fiscal discipline, zero-debt status, and tangible investments in infrastructure and education. He contrasted this clean record with what he termed a double standard in Nigerian politics.
The Special Counsel lamented that individuals with documented histories of corruption and unexplained wealth often face minimal pushback, whereas Obi’s public integrity is subjected to relentless political targeting.
Ejimakor concluded that this environment highlights deep-seated systemic biases, where financial transparency and accountability do not shield a public figure from partisan attacks, but instead make them a larger target.
