The crisis rocking the Adamawa State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has deepened, following another wave of defections involving senior party members and thousands of their supporters.
The latest defection was led by former Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly and serving Yola South lawmaker, Kabiru Mijinyawa, who announced his exit from the APC and joined the Action Peoples Movement (APM).
In a letter dated September 13, 2026, and addressed to the state APC chairman, Mijinyawa cited alleged failures by the party to uphold internal democracy, transparency and the rule of law.
He specifically criticised the recent APC primary elections in the state, alleging that candidates were selected without due process.
Mijinyawa’s departure came barely two days after another group of APC stakeholders led by Tahir Shehu defected to the APM.
Shehu had earlier urged APC leaders to urgently reconcile aggrieved members, warning that unresolved internal disputes could weaken the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
The crisis has also affected the party’s governorship and senatorial contests.
Abdulraman Haske, who was reported to have won the APC governorship primary, has emerged as the APM governorship candidate after reportedly being replaced on the APC platform by Ahmad Galadima.
Similar controversies have been reported in the senatorial contests. In Adamawa Central, Abdulraman Abbati, reportedly the sole aspirant, was replaced by Salihu Mustapha, while Peter Fwa, who was also said to have been unopposed in Adamawa South, was replaced by Felix Tangwami.
Fwa subsequently left the APC for the Labour Party (LP), alongside thousands of his supporters.
However, the Adamawa APC has downplayed the defections, with its Publicity Secretary, Dogo Victor, describing them as “political tourism.”
Victor questioned the political significance of some of the defectors based on their previous electoral performances, while insisting that the APC remained firmly rooted at the grassroots.
He expressed confidence that the ruling party would secure victory in the 2027 elections, pointing to the political strength and track record of Governor Ahmadu Fintiri as part of the factors shaping the state’s political landscape.
The latest defections have nevertheless intensified questions over the APC’s internal cohesion in Adamawa as the 2027 elections draw closer.
