I’m lucky to still have both parents at almost 60— Iyabo Obasanjo

Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has expressed gratitude for still having both her parents alive as she approaches the age of 60, describing herself as one of the fortunate few.

Speaking during an interview on The Morayo Show, Iyabo reflected on her upbringing, revealing that her mother was the stricter of her two parents.

According to her, her mother’s discipline was not physical but came through stern conversations that often left a lasting impression.

“My mom was more strict than my dad while we were growing up. Not strict in beating or using the cane, but in the kind of one-on-one conversation she would have with you. You could end up crying,” she said.

Iyabo said she considers herself blessed to still have both parents at a stage in life when many people have lost one or both.

“My mom is still alive. I am one of the lucky ones that get to be almost 60 and still have both parents alive. It is not common in this country or even around the world because people’s lifespan is what it is,” she said.

Describing her mother as “a wonderful human being” and “a wonderful soul,” Iyabo acknowledged that their relationship, like many between parents and children, had experienced difficult moments over the years.

“My mom is a wonderful human being, a wonderful soul. We’ve had our ups and downs just like any child,” she said

She added that growing older had helped her develop healthier boundaries and a deeper appreciation for both her parents.

“But as you grow older, you have to have your limits with your parents. Now I have a great relationship with both parents,” she added.
