A Nigerian man has shared how neighbours in his compound rallied together to prevent a fellow resident from being evicted after he fell six months behind on his rent.
According to the narrator @kenkenlewu on X (formerly Twitter), the man had spent the previous year buying fuel to pump water for everyone in the compound, but nobody knew he was facing financial difficulties.
He explained that the man casually mentioned in their group chat that he was experiencing issues at work and had not been paid, but continued going to work and interacting normally with other residents.
However, the situation became clear when the landlord’s lawyer arrived with policemen to evict him over the unpaid rent.
As everyone gathered outside, one of the neighbours immediately offered to help settle the debt.
In the neighbour’s words:
“I’m dropping ₦300k, let’s pay this guy’s rent.”
Two other neighbours who were not even around reportedly joined the effort, sending ₦100,000 each.
The narrator revealed that the contributions continued until the residents had raised enough money to pay two years’ rent for the man, with ₦120,000 left over for him.
The unexpected intervention reportedly left the landlord’s lawyer and the policemen confused as the residents came together to prevent their neighbour from losing his home.
The story has generated reactions online, with social media users applauding the neighbours’ support and praising the man for his kindness to other residents despite quietly facing financial difficulties.
