Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has declared himself superior to every other actor in the Nigerian film industry, challenging anyone who believes they stand on the same level with him to say so publicly.
The iconic thespian made the bold statement during an interview with comedian Isbae U on the online show Curiosity Made Me Ask, where he was asked to name his favourite actor. Rather than picking one, Edochie delivered a response that has set the industry buzzing.
“I can’t pick one because I consider myself bigger than all of them,” he said.
The 84-year-old actor also addressed recent claims made by colleague Yemi Solade, who had asserted that while Edochie was older, he actually began acting before the legendary star. Edochie dismissed such claims with characteristic calmness, saying he had never felt the need to respond.
“People have been writing that they are older than me in the industry, but I don’t respond. Whoever said they are of the same level with me should come out and say it,” he declared.
When asked about being widely described as a legend in Nollywood, Edochie said he was uncertain of what the term truly meant but appreciated the recognition nonetheless.
“I don’t know the definition of people’s legend, but I’m glad to be celebrated,” he said.
Edochie also revealed that he was already established in his professional career long before venturing into acting.
The veteran disclosed that he eventually retired as a Director of Programmes, a position he held before becoming one of the most recognizable faces in African cinema.
