I Won’t Tell You The Strategy, But See What Happened In Core PDP States In The South-South – Wike

Wike’s remarks offer insight into the complex dynamics of Nigerian politics and the challenges faced by political parties in the country. While the PDP may have struggled in the 2019 election, it remains a major force in Nigerian politics and will likely continue to play a significant role in shaping the country’s future.

During a media chat in Portharcourt, Rivers state, former governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike, addressed claims that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lost votes in the presidential election due to the candidacy of Peter Obi from the Labour Party. Wike stated that the PDP did not receive even 10 percent of the votes in any of the South East states, despite having their own presidential candidate. 

In his words…”Look at in the south south, they didn’t get 25 percent. Are these not core PDP states, see what happened in Cross River state, but I won’t tell you the strategy, PDP came third, look at what happened in Edo state, PDP came third, look at what happened here (Rivers state), PDP came third”

Wike’s criticism of PDP leaders from the South East also speaks to the broader issue of party unity and discipline. In order to win elections, political parties must be able to rally around their candidates and present a united front to voters. Wike’s comments suggest that this was not the case for the PDP in the 2019 election.

In his words… “All those PDP leaders from the South East who will go and sit and make noise, they couldn’t give their presidential candidate up to 10 percent, not one, you say Obi was running election, so, Obi was running election, is that why you cannot give 25 percent, what has Obi got to do with you having 25 percent”

One will not be wrong to say that Peter Obi had also been a strong force in the just concluded presidential election in the country which produced Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the president.
