“I was flabbergasted” — Lady reacts after mum bargains ₦4,000 fish to ₦1,000

A lady has shared her surprise after watching her mother dramatically reduce the price of a fish from ₦4,000 to ₦1,000 during a market visit.

The lady, who accompanied her mother to buy fish, said she was stunned by the bargaining skills she witnessed between her mother and the fish seller.

According to her, the seller initially priced one fish at ₦4,000, but her mother immediately offered ₦2,000. While the negotiation continued, the lady said she found herself wondering why her mother was bargaining so aggressively.

How the fish seller eventually agreed

The lady said things became even more surprising when her mother refused to pay the ₦2,000 she had initially offered.

She said, “After the woman told her to bring money my mom said she can’t pay #2,000 for this small fish the she will pay #1,000.”

The unexpected turn left the lady flabbergasted, particularly because the fish seller had originally demanded ₦4,000.

She added that after the back-and-forth between both women, the seller eventually agreed to sell the fish to her mother for ₦1,000.

Lady wants to learn the bargaining trick

Reflecting on the experience, the lady said she was still trying to understand how some women manage to negotiate prices so effectively in Nigerian markets.

She said, “Now I keep asking myself, how do women do this bargaining of price?”

The experience has sparked a light-hearted conversation around the bargaining culture often seen in Nigerian markets, with the lady seemingly eager to learn the technique that helped her mother secure the fish at a fraction of its initial asking price.
