Governor of Edo state, Godwin Obaseki has announced the increase of the minimum wage of workers in the state civil service to N70,000.
Obaseki disclosed this on Monday at the commissioning of the Labour House, built for the organized labour in the state, adding that will take effect on Workers Day – May 1, 2024.
The governor said his administration is raising the minimum wage for the state’s workers from N40,000 to N70,000. He explained that the details of the new minimum wage would be made known to the public during the celebration of this year’s Workers Day on Wednesday.

President of the National Labour Congress, (NLC) Comrade Joe Ajaero recently urged the Federal Government to consider N1 million as minimum wage if inflation and other economic indicators worsen.
Ajaero said the new minimum wage must reflect the country’s economic conditions. He expressed the belief that as long as the dollar keeps rising against the naira, the demands for a higher minimum wage will be inevitable.
The NLC president explained that the initial N200,000 minimum wage proposal which was reviewed to N400,000 was no longer tenable given the soaring price of food items and inflation.
Ajaero said; “This N1 million may be relevant if the value of the Naira continues to depreciate; if the inflation continues to depreciate. The demand for Labour is equally dependent on what is happening in society”.
