A Federal High Court in Abuja will decide today whether former President Goodluck Jonathan is eligible to run in the 2027 presidential election.
TheNewsGuru reports that Justice Peter Lifu is expected to rule on a case seeking to disqualify Jonathan from taking the oath of office again, since he has already done so twice before leaving office in 2015.
This judgment follows a recent move by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, which offered Jonathan a waiver to become the party’s sole presidential candidate.
Johnmary Jideobi filed the suit, asking the court to prevent Jonathan from presenting himself as a candidate for the 2027 presidential election with any political party.
The plaintiff also wants the court to stop the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from accepting, processing, or publishing Jonathan’s name as a presidential candidate.
Justice Lifu set today as the date for judgment after hearing arguments from both sides’ lawyers.
The plaintiff asked the court to decide if Jonathan is still eligible to run for president, based on Sections 1(1), (2), (3), and 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution.
This case is happening as the Turaki-led PDP faction makes new efforts to have Jonathan run in the 2027 election.
