Fintiri inaugurates Yola modern market

Gov. Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa on Tuesday inaugurated the rebuilt Yola town Market, named Modibbo Adama Modern Market Yola (MAMMY) to enhance the business environment and economic development of the state.

Speaking at the event in Yola, Fintiri said over the years, traders and residents lived with the painful and gory realities of recurring fire outbreaks resulting in loss of goods worth millions of Naira and livelihoods in the market.

According to him, the new market has 936 shops made up of 120 Open and 816 Lockup shops with stronger perimeter fence and wider access roads for fire trucks and a fire service station, comprehensive water reticulation system with overhead tanks.

“There’s a fire hydrant at strategic points to prevent future disaster, desilted drainages, modern toilets and sanitation facilities for traders’ comfort.  There is also an administrative block for day to day running of the market”, he said.

According to him, the project is 100 per cent delivered by indigenous Adamawa contractors.

Fintiri called on the traders to take full ownership of the market by way of care for their business premises.

He further directed the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industries to hire capable facility managers who will take over the security and cleaning of the modern market to safeguard the market and give it a befitting status.

In his remarks, the Lamido of Adamawa, Alhaji Muhammadu Barkindo appreciated the governor for the job well done and urged users to protect the market as well as abide by the regulations for safety and security.

Barkindo, who was represented by Aminu Galadima, said the project would impact positively in the economic development of the state.

Alhaji Ibrahim-86, who spoke on behalf of the market leaders, appreciated Gov. Fintiri for fulfilling his promises and assured continued support for economic development of the state.

The Chairman Yola-South Local Government Council,  Alhaji Salihu Malkohi, lauded the governor for the project and urged for another modern market in Ngurore where the government generates 70 per cent of its revenue in the area.

Malkohi also urged for the construction of an access road to Tashan Sani, another revenue source. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
