A condition has been given by the Federal Government to lift the suspension of Twitter Operations in the country.

Foreign Minister Geoffrey Onyeama announced this at a meeting in Abuja today, June 7, with foreign envoys. According to Onyeama, only when the platform is used “responsibly” can the micro-blogging website be restored to Nigeria.

Although there is no clear timeline for the restoration, the micro-blogging site has been stopped, to prevent its use as a platform to destabilize and facilitate crime.

“The condition would be responsible use of the social media and that really has to be it.

We are not saying that Twitter is threatening the country or any such thing. Why we have taken this measure is to stop them to be used as platforms for destabilisation and facilitation of criminality or encouragement of criminalities” he said

The meeting in Abuja included envoys from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and the EU who had condemned Twitter’s “indefinite” suspension in Nigeria.

After the meeting, Onyeama told the newspapers that it had called for the meeting because the Federal administration was taking the comments of the envoys “very seriously.”
The Minister added that the administration of Buhari had to keep an eye on its “essential goal and heritage,” which he said is life and property safety.

“We want to use social media for good. Differences of opinion is not a problem; everybody will not think alike.

But lives matter; Nigerian lives matter and we have to do everything we can to preserve Nigerian lives. And when we feel our goals are threatened, actions need to be taken.”he said
