The Federal Government has announced an improvement in Nigeria’s electricity generation, which rose from 3,951 megawatts to 4,300 megawatts between March 28 and April 10, 2026.
The update was contained in a statement issued in Abuja by Bolaji Tunji, Special Adviser to the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, on Strategic Communications and Media Relations.
According to the statement, the gradual increase in output aligns with the Minister’s earlier assurance that power supply would improve within two weeks, following engagements with stakeholders in the sector.
The government attributed the rise in generation largely to improved gas supply to thermal power plants, which increased from about 605 million standard cubic feet per day to over 704 million within the period under review.
It also noted that mechanical and operational availability of power infrastructure improved during the period, with peak operational availability rising to over 4,694MW, reflecting better efficiency in electricity generation.
Despite occasional fluctuations, the statement said the overall trend indicates a gradual recovery in the power sector, driven mainly by enhanced gas supply and improved coordination among stakeholders.
The government stressed that Nigeria’s heavy reliance on thermal power makes gas supply a critical factor in sustaining electricity generation, adding that ongoing interventions in the gas-to-power value chain remain central to reforms in the sector.
To sustain the progress, the Minister of Power has inaugurated a Gas-to-Power Monitoring Committee to address bottlenecks in gas delivery and strengthen coordination between gas suppliers and generation companies.
The committee is also expected to ensure real-time monitoring of supply and improve overall stability in electricity generation across the country.
The government assured Nigerians that ongoing reforms would continue to deliver gradual improvements, even as it acknowledged that the sector still faces significant challenges in achieving stable and reliable electricity supply nationwide.
