Shettima assures Cross River of seaport, highway projects

Vice President Kashim Shettima has pledged that the proposed Bakassi Deep Seaport and Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will be completed, calling on residents of Cross River State to support the re-election bids of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Bassey Otu in 2027.

Shettima gave the assurance on Monday at the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign rally held at the U.J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar, where he represented President Tinubu.

He expressed appreciation to the people of Cross River for their support for the administration over the last three years, describing the relationship between the government and residents as “an alliance of prosperity, an alliance of opportunity.”

“Over the past three years, you have shown us support, and you have resisted the lies and propaganda intended to misrepresent us,” he said.

The Vice President appealed to voters to renew the mandates of Tinubu, Otu and other APC candidates seeking seats in the National Assembly and the Cross River State House of Assembly.

He said the party was asking for another opportunity to govern based on its performance, noting that elected leaders had a responsibility to remain answerable to the people.

Addressing infrastructure development, Shettima said the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway would improve connectivity among coastal communities, facilitate the transportation of goods and people, promote tourism and encourage investment across the region.

He noted that the highway was also expected to provide thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities while stimulating economic activities in communities along its route.

Speaking on the Bakassi Deep Seaport, the Vice President disclosed that the Federal Government had approved the project and expressed confidence that it would emerge as an international maritime hub when completed.

“When completed, it will become an international maritime gateway. It will attract shipping companies. It will generate employment,” he said.

Shettima described the seaport and coastal highway as strategic infrastructure projects that would help establish Cross River as a major player in Nigeria’s maritime economy.

On education, he said the Federal Government’s student financing initiative was aimed at developing human capital, reducing the financial pressure on parents and making higher education more accessible.

He added that the programme would help prevent financial difficulties from denying young Nigerians the opportunity to pursue their educational goals.
