A Lagos-based photographer, popularly known as Eman Pictures, has recovered a stolen MacBook Pro and four external hard drives containing footage from five weddings after CCTV footage of the suspected thief went viral on social media.
The recovery followed a public appeal and an offer of ₦500,000 as a reward for credible information leading to the identification of the suspect and recovery of the equipment stolen during a wedding ceremony at Oriental Hotel, Lagos.
The incident occurred on October 31, 2026, when the photographer was covering a wedding at the hotel.
According to the account shared online, a bag containing a MacBook Pro M1 and four external hard drives was stolen from the bride’s room.
The hard drives contained photographs and video footage from approximately five weddings that had yet to be delivered to the respective couples, raising concerns about the possible loss of their wedding memories and several months of professional work.
Following the incident, Eman Pictures appealed for public assistance, explaining that the missing equipment was essential to the photography business and that the stored files represented irreplaceable memories belonging to clients.
The photographer subsequently released CCTV footage obtained from the hotel, showing an unidentified man allegedly entering the bride’s room, taking the bag and leaving the premises.
The footage attracted widespread attention after it was circulated across social media platforms, with photographers, videographers, event planners, blogs and other concerned Nigerians sharing the appeal.
A ₦500,000 reward was also announced for anyone with credible information that could help identify the individual and recover the missing belongings through the appropriate authorities.
The appeal generated reactions from social media users, including individuals who claimed to recognise the man captured in the footage from previous theft incidents at public events in Lagos.
Some users alleged that the individual had been involved in similar activities for several years, although those allegations have not been independently established.
In an update shared on Instagram on Thursday, November 5, Eman Pictures confirmed that the stolen laptop and all four external hard drives had been recovered.
However, the photographer disclosed that the files stored on the hard drives had been formatted before the recovery.
“I’m grateful to announce that my stolen MacBook and all four hard drives have been recovered.
“Although the hard drives had already been formatted, I’m thankful to have my equipment back,” the photographer stated.
Eman Pictures expressed appreciation to Nigerians who helped publicise the incident, acknowledging the contributions of fellow creatives, blogs, friends and strangers who shared the footage and provided assistance.
The photographer said the reposts, tags, telephone calls, messages, prayers and other expressions of support had exceeded expectations.
The recovery was also confirmed by an event planner identified on X as Ms Deeeee, using the handle @deeeeoflagos, who had earlier raised the alarm and appealed for assistance.
In an update, she announced that all the missing items had been recovered, expressing optimism that the formatted files could still be retrieved.
“Every item has been recovered; even though he formatted the files, it can still be retrieved back. A big thank you to everyone who came through to help out. God bless you,” she wrote.
The event planner’s announcement came less than 24 hours after the CCTV footage and images of the suspected thief attracted widespread attention on social media and several news platforms.
The development brought relief to those concerned about the equipment and the possibility that five couples could lose photographs and videos documenting their wedding ceremonies.
However, the formatting of the hard drives has raised fresh concerns about the condition of the stored files and whether the original wedding footage can be fully restored.
Although the event planner expressed confidence that the data could be recovered, there was no confirmation that the affected files had been successfully retrieved.
The circumstances surrounding the recovery of the equipment have also not been fully disclosed.
It remains unclear whether the suspected thief was arrested, whether any criminal complaint was formally lodged with the police or whether an investigation is ongoing.
There was also no confirmation that the ₦500,000 reward offered for information leading to the recovery had been paid to anyone.
The incident has renewed concerns about the security of professional equipment and personal belongings at hotels, weddings and other public events in Lagos.
For photographers and videographers, the theft of storage devices can result not only in financial losses but also in the disappearance of professional work and important records belonging to clients.
While Eman Pictures has successfully recovered the stolen equipment, the remaining concern is whether the formatted hard drives can be restored and the five outstanding wedding projects delivered to their owners.
The recovery also highlights the role of CCTV surveillance and public assistance in tracing stolen property, while leaving unanswered questions about the identity and whereabouts of the person responsible for the theft.
