The Emir of Gumel in Jigawa State, Dr Ahmad Muhammad Sani, has died at the age of 84 after spending 46 years as the traditional ruler of the emirate.
The monarch died in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday, September 3, 2026, leaving the Gumel Emirate and the Jigawa State Government mourning the loss of one of its longest-serving traditional rulers.
Confirming his death, Jigawa State Secretary to the Government, Malam Bala Ibrahim, said the state received the news with “heavy hearts and profound sorrow”.
Monarch remembered for development efforts
Beyond his long stay on the throne, the late Emir of Gumel was recognised by the state government for his involvement in issues affecting the welfare and development of his subjects.
Bala said the monarch contributed to efforts aimed at encouraging education and school enrolment, while also supporting improved access to healthcare within the emirate.
He added that the traditional ruler was committed to maintaining peace, both within Gumel and with communities outside the emirate.
According to the SSG, one of the notable aspects of the emir’s leadership was his efforts to maintain cordial relations between communities in the emirate and neighbouring border communities in the Republic of Niger.
Jigawa government mourns
The state government described the 46-year reign of the Emir of Gumel as a significant period in the history of the emirate.
Bala said the late monarch would be remembered for his dedication, humility, simplicity and commitment to the people he served.
He prayed Allah to forgive the emir’s shortcomings and grant him eternal rest in Jannatul Firdausi.
The government said details concerning the funeral prayer would be made public by the Gumel Emirate.
