Asst. Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Simeon Akpanudom has urged Nigerians to shun crime, recklessness and other unlawful activities during the ember months.
The AIG urged Nigerians to remain security-conscious and law-abiding instead.
Akpanudom, who is in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Lagos, gave the advice on Monday during an interview with journalists at the FCID.
He stressed that the fight against crime required the collective efforts of the police, government agencies, community leaders and members of the public.
The AIG said investigation and prosecution were only aspects of the broader fight against crime, noting that greater emphasis should also be placed on crime prevention through public enlightenment and advocacy.
“Investigation is just an aspect of the whole thing. The knowledge of offences or acts that are contrary to the law is also important.
“There should be advocacy groups that talk to people.
‘’Moral instruction should also be taught to children, so that they know what is wrong and what is right, while the laws are also available for people to study,” he said.
Akpanudom said the police had continued to intensify public enlightenment efforts, particularly among young people, to discourage them from engaging in criminal activities.
He cited ongoing campaigns against cultism and other vices, saying officers had been visiting schools and other formations to educate youths on the dangers and consequences of crime.
According to him, the police conduct thorough investigations into offences and charge suspects to court, while the correctional system handles the rehabilitation aspect.
“The war against crime is total. We go around and engage stakeholders. I have visited a lot of stakeholders and I am still planning to go around.
“I have seen traditional rulers. In the near future, I also intend to visit faith-based organisations because a lot of people form congregations in these locations.
“We will talk to their leaders, so that they can pass the message to the youth to desist from committing crimes and contribute meaningfully to the growth of our nation,” he said.
The AIG said such collaborative efforts would not only help reduce crime, but also contribute to building a better image for Nigeria and promoting responsible citizenship.
As the ember months begin, Akpanudom advised Nigerians against viewing the period as an opportunity for excessive celebration, reckless spending or unlawful activities.
The police boss urged motorists to drive carefully, obey traffic regulations and respect the rights of other road users.
The AIG also warned against reckless driving and other acts capable of endangering lives or damaging government installations and property.
“People just need to continue to be law-abiding and engage in meaningful and lawful commerce and activities.
“Drive carefully, observe traffic rules and respect the rights of others. Do not drive recklessly and endanger the lives of others and even yourself.
“In the process of recklessness, we destroy government installations and property,” he said.
Akpanudom urged Nigerians to keep faith in the country, obey the law and contribute meaningfully to national development. (NAN)
