EFCC chairman begged me for $2million – Governor Matawalle

Zamfara governor, Bello Matawalle, has alleged that the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, begged him for $2 million.

This comes after the EFCC said it was investigating the governor for alleged N70 billion fraud.

Matawalle, who made the revelation in an interview with BBC Hausa on Friday, claimed that he was being investigated because he “didn’t offer the EFCC chairperson the money he requested from him”.

The governor said: “I am not resisting being probed. I’m still the governor and have immunity, no one has invited me.

“The EFCC said they were investigating me? It was when I spoke that they made allegations against me. He (Bawa) knows what he begged me to give him which I didn’t.

“The allegations against me are lies. He begged me to give him two million dollars. There is a house where I met him and he knows it, where he told me that he wants to see me.”

CorrectNG reported earlier that Matawalle publicly accused the anti-graft agency of bias and corrupt practices.

He had asked the EFCC Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, to step down and allow the commission to beam its searchlight on officials in President Muhammadu Buhari’s government and outgoing ministers.

But EFCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Osita Nwajah, however, rejected allegations of bias in its prosecution of corruption cases.

The Commission, therefore, highlighted some findings regarding Matawalle’s involvement in what it describes as “monumental” corruption.
