EFCC arraigns suspect Abraham Abiara over alleged $626,282 fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned a man identified as Abraham Idowu Abiara for allegedly stealing and diverting $626,282 into personal funds in Lagos State.

In a statement on Wednesday, the commission said Mr Abiara was arraigned before Justice Ismail Ijelu of the Lagos State High Court on Tuesday, where the one-count charge of stealing and dishonest conversion of funds against him was read to him.

“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Lagos Zonal Directorate 1, Ikoyi, on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, arraigned one Abraham Idowu Abiara before Justice Ismail Ijelu of the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja for alleged $626,282 (Six Hundred and Twenty Six Thousand, Two Hundred and Eighty Two United States Dollars) fraud,” the anti-graft agency said.

Mr Abiara, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge and was subsequently remanded in a correctional facility following a motion by the prosecution. Mr Ijelu also adjourned the case to October 26, 2026, for a hearing on the bail application and commencement of trial.

“In view of his plea, the prosecution counsel, C.C. Okezie urged the court to remand the defendant in a Correctional Facility and fix a date for trial. Justice Ijelu, therefore adjourned the matter to October 26, 2026 for hearing of bail application and trial to commence,” the EFCC added.
