A man has cancelled his wedding after an uncomfortable meeting with his fiancée’s family over plans to upgrade their initially modest wedding ceremony.
According to the man, he and his fiancée, who both earn below ₦700,000, had agreed to hold a small and intimate wedding to avoid spending beyond their means.
However, four months before the ceremony, his father gave him ₦10 million, explaining that he had saved the money for years and promised himself he would give it to his son before his wedding. The groom-to-be subsequently informed his fiancée that he intended to invest the money in a business after their marriage.
Fiancée’s family requests bigger wedding
Days later, the man said his fiancée’s family invited him to dinner and proposed changing the wedding venue and other arrangements because some relatives were travelling from abroad.
When he asked whether they would contribute financially towards the proposed changes, they reportedly declined. He explained that his parents were already covering most of the wedding expenses and he could not afford the additional costs.
According to him, his fiancée’s mother responded, “My daughter is already marrying down, at least don’t disgrace us in front of our family members”
The man said he looked towards his fiancée after the remark but she remained silent.
Groom-to-be calls off wedding
Following the exchange, he informed her parents that they should find someone they considered more suitable for their daughter as he was no longer interested in proceeding with the marriage.
Despite receiving several calls from the family seeking further discussions, the man said he had already informed his parents of his decision and cancelled the wedding from his side.
The incident raises questions about financial expectations, family involvement and respect between intending couples as they prepare for marriage.
