Democracy Day: Uba Maigari highlights regional devt commission achievements

The Federal Government on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, reaffirmed its commitment to consolidating Nigeria’s democratic gains and accelerating national development.

Members of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on the 27th Democracy Day Celebration addressed a World Press Conference at the Tunda Hall, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in Abuja. The theme was “27 Years of Democratic Governance in Nigeria: Achievements, Challenges, and the Road Ahead.” It provided stakeholders an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey and outline priorities for the future.

Uba Maigari Ahmadu, Honourable Minister of State for Regional Development, delivered remarks outlining the mandate and ongoing efforts of the Ministry.

He highlighted achievements of the regional development commissions, including recently commissioned projects across the North-East region, ongoing interventions, and key infrastructure projects.

The Minister also spoke on the strategic readiness of the newly established commissions to drive inclusive growth and sustainable development across Nigeria’s regions.

The press conference was chaired by Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, who serves as Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee.

Other dignitaries present included: Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation and Chairman of the Media and Publicity Sub-Committee; Joseph Terlumun Utsev, Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation and Idi Mukhtar Maiha, Minister of Livestock Development.

The rest are Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy; Permanent Secretaries and other senior government officials.

    In his remarks, Senator Akume and other committee members emphasized the Federal Government’s resolve to deepen democratic institutions, promote inclusive governance, and address pressing national challenges.

    “Together, they reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to consolidating Nigeria’s democratic gains, promoting national development, and addressing the challenges facing the nation,” the statement said.

    Nigeria marks 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance on June 12, 2026, following the return to civil rule in 1999.
