“Conflicting Age Claims Emerge” — 33-Year-Old Arrested For Allegedly Writing FCT Fire Service Father’s Promotion Examination

A 33-year-old man, Monsuru Musa, and his father, Musa Mohammed, an employee of the Federal Capital Territory Fire Service, have been handed over to the police following an allegation that the son attempted to write his father’s promotion examination.

Monsuru was reportedly apprehended on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, the third day of the promotion examination organised by the FCT Civil Service Commission at the National Open University of Nigeria.

Security operatives deployed at the instance of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, intercepted him during the exercise after he was allegedly found sitting the examination on behalf of his father.

During questioning, Monsuru reportedly claimed that his father was ill but was within the university premises. He also alleged that his father had instructed him to take the examination in his place.

The questioning subsequently produced conflicting accounts of Mohammed’s age.

Asked how old his father was, Monsuru reportedly put his age at between 67 and 68 years. Mohammed, however, gave a different account, saying he would turn 60 in February 2027.

During further interrogation, the Fire Service employee reportedly said he completed primary school in 1977 and secondary school in 1982.

The differing accounts have not been resolved in the reports reviewed. They do not, on their own, establish that Mohammed falsified his age or employment records.

Both father and son reportedly made statements to operatives of the State Security Service before being handed over to the police for further investigation into the alleged examination impersonation.

The incident occurred during the ongoing 2026 promotion exercise for FCT workers, which began on Monday, October 5.

Ahead of the exercise, the Chairman of the FCT Civil Service Commission, Emeka Eze, announced that more than 10,700 workers across 145 cadres were expected to participate.

Eze said the examination would be conducted through a computer-based test at NOUN, following approval by the FCT Minister. He explained that promotion would depend on merit and available vacancies within the approved structures of the relevant agencies.

The commission chairman also said the exercise formed part of efforts to clear outstanding promotion backlogs and return staff promotion to its regular annual cycle.

He urged workers to prepare adequately and improve their computer literacy, noting that the examination would continue to be conducted electronically.

The reports reviewed did not announce any criminal charge against Monsuru or his father, or any disciplinary decision concerning Mohammed’s employment. The alleged impersonation remains under investigation.
