Days after Jerry Wesley’s widow published a public notice warning Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Emem Nnana Usoro against presenting herself as his wife, a second notice appeared in the same newspaper, this one, a petition to President Tinubu now alleges, engineered by Usoro herself using Wesley’s own family members as cover.
The petition obtained by SecretsReporters describes a public dispute playing out in the press within weeks of Wesley’s death. Grace Wesley published a notice in ThisDay Newspaper on 8 March 2021 cautioning Usoro who’s now in charge of operations in CBN against presenting herself as Wesley’s lawful wife. The petitioners allege that in response, Usoro gathered members of the Wesley-Efedede family and had them appear to co-sign a notice in the same newspaper on 12 March 2021 disputing Grace Wesley’s claim.
That second notice, the petition says, was later disowned by the very family members named on it, who alleged they had been pressured into signing on the false pretext that doing so would prevent the cancellation of one of Wesley’s ongoing business projects. A joint one-year remembrance notice, the petition states, was later published on 1 February 2022, this time signed by Grace Wesley, Wesley’s mother, his siblings and family representatives together, suggesting, according to the petitioners, that the family had by then reunited against the earlier manoeuvre.
The petition then turns to a claim more startling than any newspaper notice. It alleges that Usoro told the family she spent ₦2 million on IVF treatment that resulted in the birth of twins for Wesley before his death. Then, towards the end of 2022, over a year and a half after Wesley had died, the petition alleges Usoro sent an emissary to inform the Wesley-Efedede family that she had used Wesley’s sperm, stored in a sperm bank, and a surrogate mother, to deliver a third child fathered by a man already eighteen months in his grave.
The petitioners describe this second claim as having further traumatised Wesley’s aged mother and the wider family, and allege that Usoro’s unauthorised access to Wesley’s private documents which the petition says remain in her custody to this day, made much of this possible in the first place.
If accurate, this timeline would mean a family already in dispute over a newspaper notice was confronted, a year and a half later, with an entirely separate claim about a posthumous child with each development, according to the petition, arriving on Usoro’s terms and through her own channels. None of these claims have been tested in any court, and Usoro has not publicly addressed them.
SecretsReporters had earlier published how Emem Usoro snatched the married lover which led to her using the Nigerian Police to kidnap its reporter, followed by our last report on her where the wife of the man he snatched petitioned her to the president here here and here.
