Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed how his perception of veteran entertainer Charly Boy, changed after seeing how he cared for his late parents.
Obasanjo disclosed this during an interview with media personality Isbae U on Curiosity Made Me Ask, where he was asked why he often described Charly Boy as “jagajaga.”
He recalled that he initially had little regard for Charly Boy because of his unconventional appearance and lifestyle, despite having great respect for his late father, Justice Chukwudifu Oputa.
“Charly Boy is so jagajaga that I don’t know anything about him. Can you see a man who dressed like a woman? Like a gentleman, who dressed like a bushman.
I run away from him because he’s too jagajaga. But he has a good father, Justice Oputa. Oh, what a great man. I wish Charly Boy had resembled him.”
However, Obasanjo explained that his perception changed after visiting Justice Oputa at Charly Boy’s home and witnessing how well he was cared for.
He noted that Charly Boy remained dedicated to his father until his death and also cared for his mother.
“When I first came to know Charly Boy, I had no iota of regard or respect for him. But when I went to visit Justice Oputa in Charly Boy’s house. And then I went inside the house. I saw how Justice Oputa was being taken care of. So I started changing my mind about Charly Boy,” he recalled.
Obasanjo added that he later confronted Charly Boy about his “jagajaga” lifestyle but learnt that the unconventional persona was part of how he made a living.
The former president also described Charly Boy as intelligent, noting that making a living from such an unusual public persona requires intelligence.
