The attorney general of the federation, Abubakar Malami has revealed that the Buhari administration has been able to recover $311 million stolen by the late Nigerian dictator, Gen. Sani Abacha.

Nigerian leaders have been accused of corruption since the days the country found her independence till date. The monies are believed to have been stolen from 1993 to 1998.

According to Malami, the money would be used to construct the Second Niger Bridge, Abuja-Kano, and Lagos-Ibadan expressways to help in the infrastructure.

Malami said: “So I think we are doing wonderfully well in terms of deploying the recovery of the looted assets and deploying same in projects that impact positively on the lives of people,”

“We are pursuing a lot of assets across the globe, and we intend very soon, we are coordinating a further meeting relating to huge recovery in the UK associated with certain personalities, But I would not like to give further disclosure in respect of that to put into consideration the need not to be pre-emptive as far as our strategies are concerned.”

Recall that the Republic of Ireland recently entered into an agreement with the government of Nigeria to return stolen monies from Abacha the amounts to ₦2.5Billion or the equivalent of €5.5 million.

Helen McEntee , the Minister for Justice and Equality made it known that: “I am very pleased to sign this Memorandum of Understanding between Ireland and Nigeria. This represents the culmination of a long process which began with an internationally led investigation.

“The Criminal Assets Bureau took part in this international operation which led to the freezing of over $1 bn in funds worldwide, of which approximately €5.5 million was identified in a Dublin based bank account.

“The assets misappropriated by the late Gen. Sani Abacha, former Head of State of Nigeria , were frozen in a bank account in Ireland by the Criminal Assets Bureau in October 2014.
