Budget delay: Aisha Yesufu says Tinubu should have been impeached long ago

Human rights activist and co-convener of the BringBackOurGirls Movement, Aisha Yesufu, has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should have been impeached long before now.

Yesufu made the remark in a post shared on her verified X account on Tuesday while reacting to recent comments from the National Assembly over the delayed implementation of the 2026 national budget.

Her reaction followed a statement by the Senate Chief Whip and Senator representing Borno North, Mohammed Tahir Monguno, who reportedly described the failure to implement the capital component of the national budget as an “impeachable offence.”

Responding to the development, the activist challenged lawmakers to act on their position if they believed the allegation warranted such constitutional consequences.

“Start the process already. President Tinubu should have been impeached years ago,” Yesufu wrote.

The outspoken activist has consistently criticised the Tinubu administration over its handling of governance and national issues.

Her latest comments also come weeks after she accused members of the National Assembly of enabling what she described as the excesses of the current administration.

According to Yesufu, lawmakers have failed to effectively hold the executive accountable, despite having the constitutional responsibility to provide oversight.

Her remarks are expected to fuel further political debate, especially as concerns continue to mount over the pace of budget implementation and broader governance issues under the current administration.
