The Nigerian media and entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning following the reported death of veteran media entrepreneur and founder of the Nigeria Media Nite-Out Awards, Sola Olugbemiro, popularly known as Solkem.
Olugbemiro reportedly died late on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at Ifako General Hospital, Ifako, Lagos, after his health condition reportedly deteriorated.
A close ally of the deceased disclosed that Olugbemiro slumped on Thursday and subsequently became critically ill.
According to the source, the media entrepreneur did not fully recover from the incident, with his condition said to have worsened on Sunday before he was eventually pronounced dead later that night.
“He slumped on Thursday and did not really come out of it. His condition became worse yesterday and he eventually died in the night,” the close ally told Newsmen.
Olugbemiro’s death comes as a major shock to the Nigerian media community, particularly because he had remained actively involved in the organisation of the Nigeria Media Nite-Out Awards, one of the country’s notable platforms for recognising excellence in journalism, broadcasting, public relations, entertainment and media practice.
Only earlier this month, preparations were announced for the 20th anniversary edition of the Nigeria Media Nite-Out Awards, with Olugbemiro identified as the convener and CEO of Solkem Entertainment.
The Nigeria Media Nite-Out Awards was established about two decades ago to recognise and celebrate the contributions of media practitioners across Nigeria. Earlier reports identified Olugbemiro as the founder of the awards and chairman of Solkem Entertainment.
His reported death therefore comes at a particularly poignant moment, with the organisation preparing to mark two decades of the awards platform.
TGM understands that further details surrounding his death, including funeral arrangements and official statements from his family, colleagues and the Nigeria Media Nite-Out Awards organisers, are expected to emerge.
