BREAKING: Finally, Cristiano Ronaldo Breaks Silence On Jorge Jesus Dispute Leading To Portugal Exit

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence over the circumstances surrounding his latest involvement with the national team, accusing head coach Jorge Jesus of going back on an agreement concerning his participation in the team’s matches.

Ronaldo, in a lengthy statement released on Tuesday, said he had decided to give his own account of events after what he described as a series of discussions with the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) and the newly appointed national team coach.

According to the 41-year-old forward, he had initially prepared a letter to the Portuguese people ahead of his eventual departure from international football following the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

He said that after the World Cup, while returning from the United States, the president of the Portuguese Football Federation appealed to him to reconsider his decision to leave the national team, as the federation wanted him to continue.

Ronaldo further disclosed that the federation president subsequently sought his opinion on the appointment of Jorge Jesus as the new national team coach.

“I told the President of the Federation that, in my opinion, it would be the right choice,” Ronaldo said, adding that he was genuinely pleased when Jesus was eventually presented as coach.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner said his relationship with Jesus initially got off to a positive start, with the coach telling him that he was central to his plans for the national team.

Ronaldo revealed that during a meeting at Cidade do Futebol, Jesus presented him with a proposed plan for his participation in upcoming matches, including playing the opening and final matches while being managed physically through substitutions.

According to Ronaldo, Jesus also suggested that he could remain in Portugal rather than travel with the team to Norway and Denmark, before rejoining the squad ahead of the match at the Estádio do Dragão.

Ronaldo said he immediately rejected the proposal.

He explained that he could not accept being given preferential treatment by remaining in Portugal simply because he would not be playing the away matches.

“That privilege of staying in Portugal would not be a good example,” Ronaldo said.

The Portugal captain added that Jesus eventually agreed with his position and that the same understanding was maintained during another meeting at Ronaldo’s home in Lisbon on the eve of the training camp.

Ronaldo subsequently played against Sporting CP at Alvalade and, despite being substituted, said he accepted the decision without complaint.

However, the situation changed dramatically ahead of Portugal’s match in Norway.

Ronaldo said that while the squad was having lunch on the day of the match, an assistant coach approached him and informed him that Jesus wanted to speak with him.

According to Ronaldo, he was surprised when the coach asked whether he was fit enough to play for 30 minutes.

The Al Nassr forward said he had been following a physical recovery and training programme based on the understanding that he would not feature in the Norway match but would instead play in the subsequent match at the Dragão.

Nevertheless, he accepted the coach’s request and was told to prepare to play for 30 minutes.

Ronaldo said he warmed up from half-time but was ultimately not introduced.

“The coach had broken his word to me,” Ronaldo declared.

The revelation has added a fresh layer to the controversy surrounding Ronaldo’s relationship with the Portugal national team and his role under Jesus.

Ronaldo, however, stressed that his intention was to provide an accurate account of what happened rather than allow speculation to define the circumstances surrounding his latest national team experience.

The statement also raises questions about the nature of the agreement reached between the veteran forward and Jesus, and whether the breakdown in that understanding could affect Ronaldo’s future with Portugal as the team prepares for the next phase of its international campaign.
